About Me

Meet the Beebz

Picture
Thinker, writer, maker, educator. I work at the intersections of Latina/o/x studies, American studies, intellectual history, political rhetoric, and public and political culture. My research and teaching is often driven by moments when I make unexpected connections, when I or my students are able to see things from perspectives we hadn't initially expected. But I also really love to learn how to make stuff. I've processed olives. I've made furniture. And now, somewhat randomly, I've decided, "hey. let's make stickers." But not just any stickers: #substicks. The Subversive Sticker Project uses homemade vinyl decals with three simple elements:
  • a graphic design
  •  a quotation
  • a QR code
It is my hope that some of those who pick up the stickers and slap them on their water bottles, notebooks, laptops, and whatnot will also do something radical. Maybe they will follow the QR code and read an essay by James Baldwin, listen to the stories of Utah Phillips, hear about the power of metaphor to shape language, or otherwise be exposed to the world around them. Secretly I dream of a coffeeshop a year from now in a part of the country where I have never visited, and a young college student is foolishly leaving his laptop unattended with one of my #substicks emblazoned on the front. Someone walks by slowly, not to steal the student's laptop, but to snap the QR code and tune in and discover the music of Nina Simone.
